Stages dharna on the Municipal Corporation office premises NIZAMABAD: Slum dwellers under the banner of CPI (M) here on Thursday staged a dharna on the Municipal Corporation office premises demanding provision of basic amenities such as roads, safe drinking water, drainage and sanitation besides issue of ration cards and house sites. Addressing agitators, the party’s city secretary D. Venkat demanded display of lists of beneficiaries of house site pattas at every community hall in the town so that the bogus candidates could be weeded out. He also demanded handing over of sites to the beneficiaries without any delay. He said out of the 7,000 pattas that were distributed over a period of time in the town, many were bogus and only 1,500 were identified as genuine in a survey conducted under the instructions of the district Collector. Of them, only 314 beneficiaries had got possession of sites, he pointed out. He urged the authorities to clearly mention the location where the house sites were allotted to the beneficiaries. There was a lot of confusion among the patta-holders as the exact location was not mentioned on the documents, he said. Other leaders said drinking water was getting contaminated due to leakage of drains in some divisions and excessive amount of fluoride was found in the water in 25 divisions. If safe drinking water was supplied, people would be prone to serious diseases, they said. The party State committee member T. Sagar, Sabbani Latha and Noorjahan spoke.
