‘Attack on the people’

Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI State secretary Veliyam Bhargavan has termed the Central decision to stop supplying ration rice to Kerala for supply to APL consumers, “an attack on the people and a challenge to the State.” Mr. Bhargavan urged party units to hold demonstrations across the State in protest against the Centre’s decision.

Then and now

The Centre, he pointed out, had been slashing Kerala’s ration rice quota ever since the UPA government assumed office.

The State had got 1,13,420 metric tonnes of rice till March 2006 for distribution among APL cardholders. This was reduced at one go to 17,056 metric tonnes.

The present decision had come despite the Centre’s claim that the country had had record rice output and procurement.

One could not help suspecting the government’s motives here, Mr. Bhargavan said.
