Nod for new elevated road project

Staff Reporter

To facilitate movement of players from Games Village to Nehru Stadium

The project over Barapullah drain is expected to cost Rs. 499 crore

It will help movement of traffic from East Delhi to Central and South Delhi

NEW DELHI: To facilitate the movement of nearly 10,000 players and officials, taking part in the Commonwealth Games-2010, from the Games Village to the main venue at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the Delhi Government’s Expenditure Finance Committee on Thursday cleared a proposal to construct an elevated road over the Barapullah drain from Sarai Kale Khan to the stadium. This project is expected to cost Rs. 499 crore.

Announcing the decision after the meeting, Finance Minister A.K. Walia said the elevated road would reduce the travel time from the Games Village to Nehru Stadium.

It would serve as a dedicated corridor for movement of players, he said.

The Minister said Rs.499 crores would be released for the project that would be completed within 24 months from the award of work. He described the road as an important infrastructure project that would not only prove to be beneficial during the Commonwealth Games but also provide a permanent link between East Delhi and Central Delhi.

Stating that the project was aimed at providing free flow of traffic and saving time of commuters during movement of traffic from the eastern side of Delhi towards Central Delhi and South Delhi, Dr. Walia said it would ease traffic congestion on Ring Road at Ashram, Mathura Road and other arterial roads.

The Minister said the increase in average travel speed would also reduce fuel consumption, pollution and loss of man-hours and bring down the road’s maintenance cost.

Describing the road project as a “marvellous piece of architecture”, the Minister said it would come up within a very short time as the Delhi Government was keen to dedicate this project to the people at the earliest.

The Finance Committee agreed at its meeting to sanction Rs.7.80 crore for part coverage of around 750 metre portion of Trunk Drain No.1 on the right bank to facilitate widening of Road No.66 from Arterial Highway (Wazirabad-Gokulpuri Road) to Grand Trunk Road near the SDM Office at Seelampur.

The project would be undertaken to ease the traffic congestion in the area and would be completed within 18 months.
