Motor Accident Claims Tribunal awarded the compensation NEW DELHI: A Motor Accident Claims Tribunal has awarded a compensation of Rs.1.15 crore to the family of a non-resident Indian who was killed in an accident on the Delhi-Gurgaon road in 2000. Tribunal Judge Swarna Kanta awarded the compensation to the wife, two minor children and parents of Rajesh Khetrapal, who was killed in the accident on November 19, 2000, when the vehicle he was travelling in was crushed by a tractor. The court directed tractor owner Mohammad Shahid and driver Mohammad Hanif to pay up the amount within 30 days of the order. While the accident claim was made in a Delhi court, the criminal trial for the accident is going on in a Gurgaon court. Earlier Shahid had tried to escape his liability by telling the court that the tractor belonged to one Chand Ram. However, Chand Ram produced documents in the court which established that he had sold the vehicle to Shahid before the accident took place. He also established in the court that it was Shahid who had submitted a bond before a Gurgaon court to get his tractor released. While awarding the compensation, the court took into account loss of dependency, love and affection and the medical expenses incurred to treat those who were injured in the accident. Rajesh Khetrapal, who worked for a Hong Kong-based firm and stayed six months out of the country, was returning home in his vehicle along with wife and two children when the accident took place.
