Puducherry Chief Minister holds meeting with Opposition MLAs

PUDUCHERRY: Chief Minister N. Rangasamy on Thursday assured MLAs of the Opposition parties that the government would initiate steps to expedite implementation of welfare and development schemes.

He held a 90-minute discussion with 10 legislators belonging to the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) in the Assembly complex.

Mr. Rangasamy later told reporters that he had told the MLAs that the government had taken steps to implement the schemes.

Highlighting steps taken by the government, he said Rs.3.74 crore had been sanctioned for extending old age pension to 11,500 people from among the 20,000 applicants, including widows and destitute women. The administration would implement the scheme for providing old age pension to 8,500 applicants, who had crossed 55 years, after getting the Lieutenant Governor’s approval, he said.

Supply of 30 kg rice meant for January, February and March for the families living below-the-poverty-line under the free rice scheme would begin on Friday, he said.

The government would also provide assistance to more beneficiaries under the “gold for Thali” scheme, he said, adding that the scheme to sanction reimbursement of tuition fee for the students who joined professional courses through the Centralised Admission Committee would continue for the current academic year too.

Action would be taken to ensure early dedication of the Puducherry Kamarajar Medical College and Research Institute in the government sector, after getting necessary clearance, he said.
