SEEKING INTERVENTION: A delegation of MLAs of four parties handing over a memorandum to Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar at Raj Nivas in Puducherry on Thursday. PUDUCHERRY: Legislators belonging to four political parties on Thursday appealed to Lieutenant Governor Govind Singh Gurjar to take steps to immediately convene a session of the Assembly to discuss issues relating to “non-implementation” of welfare and development schemes and “deterioration of law and order” in the Union Territory. The delegation of MLAs belonging to the Puducherry Munnetra Congress (PMC), the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), the Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) submitted a memorandum to the Lt. Governor highlighting their 7-point demands. “As the Lt. Governor’s response to our plea has been positive, we have decided to postpone our plan to observe a dawn-to-dusk fast on Friday,” R.Viswanathan, member of the delegation, said. He said Mr. Gurjar had told the MLAs that the issues raised by them would be discussed at the Cabinet meeting slated for Saturday. A review meeting would be held to monitor the progress of implementation after a month. On the demand relating to “non-fulfilment” of assurances given on the floor of the Assembly, Mr. Gurjar had asked the legislators to continue with their efforts through the Assurances Committee. He would also follow it up. The MLAs pointed out in the memorandum that an “extraordinary situation,” where the government machinery had come to a “grinding halt,” prevailed in the Union Territory, posing hardship to the public. Several welfare schemes had been stopped on the ground of “lack of funds,” they said. Mr. Gurjar had told the delegation that he would ensure a thorough probe into the issue relating to non-allocation of 50 per cent seats in private medical colleges for the Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC) quota, Mr. Viswanathan said. The Lt. Governor had also promised to consider the plea seeking amendments to the law for ensuring continuance of Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Educational Assistance Scheme for the students admitted to professional colleges through CENTAC, he added. On the delegation’s plea for effective measures to ensure law and order, the Lt. Governor had said that the Cabinet would look into the demand for introduction of necessary laws, the legislators said. Mr. Gurjar had also told them that the Cabinet would consider expediting projects such as constructing houses for the tsunami victims. The delegation comprised K. Lakshminarayanan, N. Anand and V.K. Ganapathy (PMC), R.K.R. Anantharaman, P. Arulmurugan and N.G. Pannirselvam (PMK), R. Viswanathan and N. Kalainathan (CPI) and P.R. Siva (MDMK).
