Tunnel in Nallamala hills

Special Correspondent

ONGOLE: The stage has been set for drilling 18.5-km-long tunnel through Nallamala hills to complete the Rs. 4,395-crore Veligonda project, considered the lifeline of Prakasam district in the next 30 months.

Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy will lay the foundation stone for the tunnel at Dornala on August 13. The tunnel would carry Krishna waters from the foreshore of Srisailam project to Veligonda reservoir to provide irrigation to parched lands, fulfilling the long-cherished dream of upland areas of Prakasam district.

The tunnel will create a record of sorts because the government is spending a fortune to make it environmental- friendly. On completion, both the tunnels will fetch 45 tmc ft of Krishna waters to irrigate 4.25 lakh acres lying mostly in Prakasam and also Nellore and Kadapa districts.
