Viswajit, Ravishankar in semifinals

Chennai: Tamil Nadu’s Viswajit Tirumurthi and C. Ravishankar progressed to the boys’ under-16 semifinals in the Lanson Toyota UC MAS Singaram Pillai (AITA) tennis tournament here on Thursday.

The results: Boys: U-16: Quarterfinals: Viswajit Tirumurthi bt Soorya Prasad 6-3, 6-3; C. Ravishankar bt Raj Vishnu 6-1, 6-1; Pre-quarterfinals: Tushar Mamlkar bt P. Vishnu 6-1, 6-1; Trivesh Singh bt S. Gokul 6-0, 6-1; C. Ravishankar bt Sai B. Backing the marathon

Former international tennis player Vijay Amritraj formally launched the registration drive of the Marg-Chennai Marathon here on Friday in the presence of several other athletes. Amritraj said that he envisioned a similar status for the Chennai Marathon as occupied by its Boston and New York counterparts.

In an attempt to inspire the Indian Olympic contingent to Beijing, Amritraj said: “Though the adage goes that the important thing is to participate, India should also pay heed to another American adage that states ‘Winning is not everything, it is the only thing”.

Squash player Joshna Chinappa said running a marathon would surely be “quite an experience” but that she was unsure if she would be able to participate in the event.

The marathon is scheduled for August 31 and winners in the professional men’s and women’s category will take home Rs. 10 lakh each.

Women’s car rally

An all-women’s car rally sponsored by JK Tyres will be organised by the Madras Motor Sports Club on August 3. The rally will be held in expert, regular, novice and duchess categories.

City Schools cricket

The TNCA City Schools cricket tournament for under-14 (boys born on or after 01.09.1994) will be conducted during the third week of August. Entries close on August 9. Entry forms can be collected from August 1 at Tamil Nadu Cricket Association Office on all working days from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

TDCA cricket

The Tiruvallur District Cricket Association (TDCA) will conduct a 30-over under-16 tournament for schools. Entry forms can be obtained from the TDCA premises, 212, M.T.H. Road, Ambattur, Chennai-53 between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. on all weekdays.

The last date for submission of entries is August 3. For further details, contact R. Devatirajan at 9444441817 and M.C. Murali at 9840146684.

Cricket tournament

Visva Group will conduct ‘B&W 2008’ Trophy cricket tournament for corporate companies from August 2 at Madras Christian College.

Bertram Tournaments

The annual Bertram Tournaments of Loyola College will commence on August 16.

The fortnight-long sports programme is open to all colleges and higher secondary schools. Eligibility rules, as framed by the inter-University Sports Board, will be followed. Students of Open University, deemed University and Correspondence courses are not eligible.

Competitions will be in the following disciplines: basketball, ball badminton, chess, table tennis, tennis (both singles and doubles) and volleyball.
