No outbreak of diseases in city, says Mayor Special meeting on financial situation sought KOCHI: The health situation in the West Kochi area is absolutely under control and no outbreak of any contagious diseases has been reported from there, Mayor Mercy Williams has said. In a few cases of jaundice and dengue fever reported from the area, the patients got infection from outside the district. The medical officer of the Corporation had looked into the issue, replying to a debate in the Corporation Council meeting on Thursday, Ms. Williams said. Corporation Councillors K.J. Antony and Haseena Noushad raised the issue at the Council meeting. Though the outbreak of contagious diseases was reported from West Kochi during the monsoon season earlier, the situation in West Kochi has improved and no outbreak of diseases has come to the notice so far. The Corporation will provide all possible assistance to the affected persons, she said. Many Councillors complained that the development activities in the city were stalled and the contractors of the Corporation were refusing to take up any work. This was due to the fact that the Corporation owed the contractors around Rs. 7.5 crore, they said. Squabbles allegedA.B. Sabu, UDF parliamentary party leader of the Corporation, said the functioning of the civic administration was hit due to internal squabbles in the ruling front. The traffic police were introducing new regulations in the city without consulting the civic body. They were even booking the vehicles that were parked in the pay and park bay of the Corporation. He urged the civic administrators to come out with a statement on the financial position of the Corporation. If necessary, the Corporation should convene a special meeting of the Council to discuss the financial position of the civic body, he demanded. Reacting to the demand, Deputy Mayor C.K. Manisankar said there was no need for convening a special meeting to discuss the financial position of the Corporation. K.N. Sunilkumar said the Corporation, which had successfully addressed the issue of biodegradable waste in the city, would soon sort out the issue of plastic waste. Councillors N. Venugopal, Shyamala S. Prabhu, T.J. Vinod, V.J. Hycinth, C. K. Gopalan and K.V.P. Krishnakumar took part in the discussion.
