KOCHI: Casual labourers of Air India at the Cochin International Airport Ltd have decided to strengthen their agitation demanding an increase in wages. Sebastian Paul, MP, who is supporting the agitation, said here on Thursday that the labourers were getting only Rs. 150 as wages daily. They are denied weekly off, provident fund and other benefits, he said. Mr. Paul said casual labourers in Mumbai airport were getting Rs. 215 daily. D. Radhakrishnan, convener of the agitation, said that talks convened by the Central Labour Commissioner to sort out the issue had failed, as the management refused to accept the demand for wage hike. He said the management asked the casual labourers to join Air India Charters Ltd and sign an agreement saying that they would withdraw their demands. The labourers have been carrying on a relay satyagraha for the last seven weeks to press their demand for higher wages, he said.
