Pumpset manufacturers diversify

COIMBATORE: Coimbatore, which is a major manufacturer of water pumpsets, has started foraying into the industrial pumpset segment too.

Southern India Engineering Manufacturers’ Association president Jayakumar Ramdass told The Hindu that at least 20 companies had invested in technology and materials and had started making these pumpsets.

The region had over 300 pumpset manufacturers. However, almost all of them were into water pumpsets used in the domestic and agricultural sectors.

With increasing competition and the number of manufacturers across the country, some of the units here started exploring opportunities for pumpsets used for various other purposes such as mining, sewage and shower booster pumps.

“As the country invests more in infrastructure, the potential is more for such pumpsets. This will be a sunrise sector,” he said.

Further, the developing countries were also focusing on infrastructure development now and hence had a demand for these pumpsets.

“It is a long process and we need to invest for another 10 years,” he said.

Mr. Ramdass expected about Rs. 250 crore investment by the companies here in this segment during the next 10 years.

Venturing into manufacture of such pumpsets needs heavy capital investment for machinery.

However, the companies had started investing and this was expected to continue, he said. Some companies were also purchasing industrial pumpsets from other countries such as Taiwan and were marketing here, he said.
