The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor Cast: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh, John Hannah, Mario Bello Director: Rob Cohen There are some movies, you so want to work. You want to like it and feel doubly let down when it is flatter than Hrithik Roshan’s washboard abs. Like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which came out a couple of months ago, The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor was riding on a lot of goodwill. Unfortunately, it is all squandered away in this strangely insipid adventurer movie. Director Stephen Sommers was told on the morning of the release of the first “Mummy” movie to make a sequel. One does not see a repeat of that with this uninspiring film. First of all, mummies belong in Egypt. Take them out of their native element of Cairo and the pyramids and stuff and they just seem to flap unhappily. So okay you wanted to give Imhotep and the City of the Dead a break. You thought it would be good to move the story to China. You took China’s biggest stars, Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh, threw in the legend of the terracotta warriors, Shangri la and the pool of eternal life and diamonds and what not and what do you get? A frantic plot that whizzes from here to there. Brendan Fraser and John Hannah as Rick and Jonathan struggle through manfully while poor Jet Li glowers behind solid earth and Michelle Yeoh makes mystical statements. MINI ANTHIKAD-CHHIBBER
