Farm output to be hit in Belgaum

Belgaum: Foodgrains production in the district is expected to be hit in the wake of less than normal rainfall till July 31.

Many villages may face drinking water shortage, forcing the local bodies to supply water by tankers.

As against the normal rainfall of 4179.5 mm, the district received 3975.3 mm in the first seven months of the year. The actual rainfall for the period was 397.5 mm as against 418.0 mm, sources said here on Friday.

They said that three of the 10 taluks had received little more than normal rainfall.

They were Khanapur, Raibag and Savadatti. In Khanapur, the actual rainfall was 1293.9 mm (normal 1114.1 mm), Raibag 290.6 mm (224.6 mm) and Savadatti 300 mm (274.7 mm).

The actual rainfall received in other taluks was Athani 190.4 mm (normal 241.7 mm), Bailhongal 314.6 mm (348.8 mm), Belgaum 724.6 mm (818.5 mm), Chikkodi 257.6 mm (305.9 mm), Gokak 222.3 mm (249.1 mm), Hukkeri 209.8 mm (362.4 mm) and Ramdurg 171.5 mm (239.7 mm). Pandegaon, Kirangi, Jambgi, Gundewadi, Parthnalli, Malabar, Anantpur, Khamkeri, Beligaon, Adahalli, Kohalli, Byadarahalli, Ardal, Adalatti and Karmuti villages in Athani taluk had been facing scarcity of drinking water since April, the sources said.
