DAVANGERE: The Bharatiya Raitha Okkuta has questioned the need to install meters for irrigation pumpsets when the State Government has decided to provide them with free power. C. Narasimhappa, president of the okkuta, told presspersons here on Friday that according to an estimate, there were over 18 lakh irrigation pumpsets in the State and the overall cost of installing a meter for each set would be Rs. 5,000. The Government would have to spend Rs. 900 crore towards installing them, he said and added that apart from this, meter readers would have to be recruited. ‘No logic’Hence, there was no logic behind the move, he said and added that if the Government wanted to know how much power was being consumed by the pumpsets, it could record consumption in the transmission unit itself. The okkuta said the Government had the right to monitor the use of power, but such huge expenses on infrastructure were not required.
