‘My son is innocent’

Staff Correspondent

Worried: R. Ningappa and his wife Annapurna at their home in Chitradurga on Friday.

Chitradurga: R. Ningappa, father of Naveen who is in a U.S. prison, says that his son is innocent and that the charges against him are false.

Mr. Naveen, a software engineer, was on an official visit to the U.S. when he was arrested and charged for sexually assaulting a girl.

Speaking to presspersons here on Friday, Mr. Ningappa maintained that Mr. Naveen in his letters written from prison maintained that he had not even seen the girl, and he knew her only through the Internet.

“I know my son cannot do such a thing,” he said.

Sitting with his wife Annapurna, Mr. Ningappa said he had been trying to contact some NRIs for help.

Meanwhile, speaking to The Hindu, his younger son Sridhar, who is in Bangalore, said that Triveni, a U.S.-based Kannada organisation, had been contacted.

Help

“We sent an e-mail and they responded saying that a representative would try to meet my brother,” he said.

To a question whether they had contacted any advocates here, Mr. Sridhar pointed out that many of them said they did not have much knowledge of international laws, particularly those of the U.S.

He, however, hoped that the Government would come to their help.
