BANGALORE: The trademark festival of Bangalore, ‘Karaga,’ has now found a place on the postal covers. The Department of Posts has released a cover that carries the emblem of the Dharmaraya Temple, the Karagadhari and the statue of Kempe Gowda.

The postal cover, worth Rs. 5, was released here on Friday by Governor Rameshwar Thakur. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Thakur said that Bangalore Karaga was the “festival of the people” celebrated by all castes and creeds. He lauded the Tigalas, originally a community of gardeners, for keeping the festival alive all along. He said: “This has been a long-awaited demand of the people, and with this gesture, the festival will be widely propagated in all parts of the country.” Addressing the gathering, H.N. Ananth Kumar, MP, said that Karaga festival symbolised “bhakti and shakti” and it was a festival of people of different faiths. Mr. Ananth Kumar said that the legacy of Karaga should get due publicity and encouragement from the Government and the public.

He appealed to the Government to chalk out programmes for the overall development of the Tigala community. Chikpet MLA Hemachandra Sagar urged the Government to declare the Dharmaraya Temple as a heritage structure. Chairman of the Karnataka Janapada Parishat G. Narayana and Chief Post Master General, Karnataka, M.P. Rajan, were present. The programme was organised by the Sri Vahnikula Kshatriya Tigalara Seva Samiti Trust.
