‘Teachers’ interests will be protected’

BANGALORE: The Government is planning to regularise the services of 61 principals and 518 teachers employed on contract in Morarji Desai Residential Schools in the State.

Replying to M.P. Nadagouda and K.T. Srikante Gowda in the Legislative Council on Friday, Minister for Social Welfare D. Sudhakar said an official meeting convened by him decided to regularise their services.

However, the State Cabinet would take a final decision on the matter. The schools recorded more than 80 percentage passes in SSLC examination, he said.

Home Minister V.S. Acharya said the Government was committed to protecting the interests of teachers.

No irregularities

Minister for Labour B. N. Bachche Gowda said no irregularities had been reported in the procurement of machinery, furniture, computers, tools and equipment for the government Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) during 2007-08. A sum of Rs. 21 crore had been spent to procure the machinery and tools.

V.S. Ugrappa (Congress), however, said the Lokayukta had submitted a report that funds had been misappropriated in the purchase of equipment. Mr. Gowda said action would be taken against officials if any lapses were found.

To a question by Marithibbe Gowda, the Minister said 2,052 posts were vacant in 147 government ITIs in the State. The number of posts sanctioned to institutes was 4,107. As many as 556 guest lecturers had been invited for the posts of junior training officer, he said.
