KOCHI: People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Friday honoured former judge of the Supreme Court V. R. Krishna Iyer with the ‘Neethiratna’ award instituted for his life-long fight for the cause of human rights. The award was given away by PDP chairman Abdul Nasir Maudany on the day commemorating the first anniversary of his release from jail after being incarcerated for a period nine-and-a-half years. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Iyer said that social and economic justice is applicable for each and every individual. No one can deny these rights of a person and these are most important for our own development. He said that he could have received the award at home, but he wanted to speak to all about the need to protect human rights and thus taking a pledge for its sake. “My strong bonding with Maudany has made me come here in person,” Mr. Iyer said. He reminded that there are many more people who are suffering because of being denied of their rights, he added. Mr. Maudany, in his speech describing the initial days that he spent in Salem jail, credited Mr. Iyer with all the human rights interventions that gave him succour during the ordeal. NCP State president K. Muraleedharan, inaugurated the event. Bishop John Thundukulam and social activist C. R. Neelakantan Namboothiri, who was also member of the award committee, spoke on the occasion. T. Arif Ali of Jama aat Islami Kerala Ameer presided over the function. K A. Hassan read out the award citation. Earlier, PDP working chairman Poonthura Siraj welcomed the gathering. PDP state general secretary K. S. Nasar proposed the vote of thanks.
