Divakaran has violated oath of office: Murali

Staff Reporter

NCP is with the UPA despite differences with the Congress

‘Karat must clarify if the Left would support the NDA’

KOCHI: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader K. Muraleedharan said here on Friday that his party would file a public interest litigation against Food and Civil Supplies Minister C. Divakaran if he went ahead with his reported move to stage a dharna in New Delhi.

Addressing a press conference, Mr. Muraleedharan alleged that the Minister had violated the oath of office by challenging the federal system in which the Centre and the States were partners.

If Mr. Divakaran wished to go ahead with the agitation over the food grains quota, he should resign, the NCP leader said.

He said the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister had to withdraw a similar move against the Centre recently. Mr. Muraleedharan welcomed the Chief Minister’s suggestion to send an all-party delegation to Centre.

Asked about political alliance, he said the NCP in Kerala would act according to the wishes of the central leadership of the party.

‘With the UPA’

Though the party had differences with the Congress, it was with the UPA, he said.

Mr. Muraleedharan said there was no scope for a third front in the present circumstances. But if the central leadership asks the party unit to take initiatives for a third front in Kerala, it would do it.

No talks had been initiated with either of the fronts for alliance, he said. He added that the central leadership of the party would form a policy on alliance by end-August.

‘Clarify’

Referring to Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary Prakash Karat’s reported statement that the CPI(M) would not support the UPA in the next general elections,

Mr. Muraleedharan said Mr.Karat should clarify whether the Left would support the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) if the results indicated a hung Parliament.

The NCP leader later condoled the demise of CPI (M) leader Harkishen Singh Surjeet.
