dated August 2, 1958: Recognition of Iraq

Britain on August 1 recognised the new Iraqi Republican Government in Baghdad, the British Foreign Office announced in London. Cairo Radio reported that British recognition of the new Iraqi Republic was handed over in Baghdad this morning to Brigadier Abdul Karim Kassem, the Iraqi Prime Minister. A message from Ottawa said that Canada had also recognised the Iraqi Government. The British note stated that recognition followed Iraqi assurances of continued friendly relations with Britain and of the maintenance of existing international obligations.
