dated August 2, 1958: Border incidents

The Union Home Minister, Pandit Govind Ballabh Pant, declared in Gauhati on August 1 that the continued border “outrages” by Pakistan could not be tolerated any longer. India, the Union Home Minister added, had long shown “best neighbourly conduct” towards Pakistan and maintained good relations with her in spite of the “provocative” attitude on the part of her neighbour. The Union Home Minister declared: “Sovereignty of India cannot be allowed to be disturbed in anyway. We cannot afford to keep our people in constant danger. If Pakistan cannot see reason we shall force them to see reason in a befitting manner.” The Union Home Minister, who was addressing a Congress workers’ meeting at the Assam Pradesh Congress House in Gauhati on August 1 said that as a result of “wanton shooting” by Pakistani forces across the border the economy of the people of the border areas had been seriously dislocated.
