‘We have asked the Engineering Department to expedite the project on a priority basis’ The estimated cost of the entire project has been pegged at Rs.300 crore NEW DELHI: Keeping in view the need for infrastructure development in the Capital before the upcoming Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has given its approval for construction of six new flyovers in the Capital. The flyovers would come up in Sultanpuri, Bijwasan, Pankha Road, Mayapuri, Mata Channa Devi Pankha Road, Patel Road-Pusa Road crossing and Shankar Road-Ridge Road crossing. According to MCD Standing Committee chairman Vijender Gupta, work on the proposed flyovers would start within six months. “We have asked the Engineering Department to expedite the project on a priority basis. We hope to complete the necessary technical evaluation of the project and get the required clearances from the technical committee’s involved so that we can begin work on all six flyovers simultaneously at the end of six months,” he said. The estimated cost of the entire project has been pegged at Rs.300 crore. In addition to building new flyovers in the Capital, the civic body also took a decision to ensure quality of the mid-day meal in MCD schools by roping in an independent agency, the Sri Ram Institute for Industrial Research, to conduct random food sample tests in its schools. This decision comes in the wake of the civic body recently facing a spate of complaints over poor quality of mid-day meals in its schools. The Sri Ram Institute for Industrial Research would collect 54 samples from various schools per month and analyse them to check for maintenance of quality standards. “The names of schools and kitchens from where samples would be collected would be chosen in an unbiased manner through the computer on a random basis. These samples would be taken not from the school kitchens but from the prepared food actually offered to children for eating. This is being done to ensure there is no compromise on the quality of mid-day meals supplied in our schools,” added. Mr. Gupta. “We plan to implement the scheme within the next ten days in August,” he added.MCD Commissioner K. S. Mehra also said strict action would be taken against organisations that are found to be compromising with the quality of food served in mid-day meals.
