PASSENGER-FRIENDLY: BMTC will now use LED display boards like this one on all its buses.

BANGALORE: Even as improper and unsystematic display of destination boards on buses confounds the commuting public, the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to install destination boards with Light Emitting Diode (LED) display on all its buses.

While LED display is in vogue on BMTC’s Vajra and Vayu Vajra coaches, the corporation has started installing LED display on its Suvarna coaches.

“As of now, we have placed orders to procure over 600 LED display units and soon, more units will be procured for installation on all buses,” a senior BMTC official told The Hindu.

At present, there is no uniformity either in the style or design of destination display boards on BMTC buses. A variety of fonts, colours and designs could be found on different BMTC buses. While one can read the boards during the day time, commuters will be having a harrowing time during nights.

The LED display unit functions with the help of a microprocessor which can be operated by the driver. All the routes being operated from the particular depot will be loaded to the processors of all buses in that depot with suitable programmes. While taking the bus on a particular route, the driver has to select the route to be displayed.

The system will have three display units — one at the front, one on the left side and one at the rear. While the front and side boards will beam the route number, from and to places and via places, the rear board will display only the route number. However, the display style could be programmed for the convenience of commuters after getting their feedback, the official said.
