BANGALORE: The Bangalore city police on Friday promised the Karnataka High Court that it would take action to ensure that illegal live band establishments did not operate in and around Bangalore. The Commissioner of Police, Bangalore, Shankar Bidari, gave this undertaking when the court was hearing petitions challenging the refusal by the police to permit the operation of live bands. The petitioners alleged that the city police had denied them permission to operate as per the law even as they looked the other way when illegal live bands were operating. The commissioner promised the court that he would initiate action to ensure that illegal live bands, if operating, would be closed. The commissioner also said that departmental action would be initiated against those officers who had given a report saying that the live bands could operate as they met all the conditions of the law. Justice N. Kumar, who heard the matter, observed that reports of the court proceedings appearing in a section of newspapers on Thursday are false and misleading. Mr. Kumar adjourned further hearing on the case. AdmittedA Division Bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Deepak Verma and Justice A.S. Bopanna admitted a public interest litigation (PIL) by S. Vasudeva, an advocate from Bangalore, seeking a direction to the authorities not to permit four MPs from the State who had voted for the confidence motion moved by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to participate in the proceedings of Parliament. The petitioner said the MPs had not only violated the party whip but also sided with the Congress during the vote on the confidence motion on July 22. The Bench ordered issue of notices to the Union and State Governments, the Election Commission of India and other respondents, including MPs, H.T. Sangliana, M. Shivanna, Manorama Madhwaraj and Kunnur Manjunath Chennappa, and adjourned the case. AdjournedThe same Division Bench adjourned a public interest litigation (PIL) petition seeking to quash a notification by the State on raising the retirement age of Government servants from 58 to 60.
