College students block road
Special Correspondent
KUMBAKONAM: Ninety two students of a private teachers’ training college here (run by Ponnaiyah Ramajyeyam group) staged a rasta roko at nearby Asur on Friday.
They alleged that they were threatened by the management to withdraw their agitation demanding conduct of special examinations.
The students, who joined the college in 2006, were not permitted to appear for the examinations in March this year as the college had not got the permission of the Government. Since then they have been agitating within the college. They alleged that some persons hired by management entered the college and threatened them on Friday. They demanded action against these persons.
Cases against 16
Police registered cases against 16 persons in this connection including representatives of the management.
Union Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar, CPI leaders Nallakannu and Durai Manickam had recently expressed their concern over the matter and appealed to the management to safeguard the future of the students.
