Anna Muzychuk holds Humpy

NEW DELHI: Top ranked K. Humpy failed to make the most of the white pieces and settled for a 30-move draw with Slovenia’s Anna Muzychuk in the fifth round of the North Urals Cup women’s chess tournament at Krasnoturinsk, Russia, on Friday.

With two rounds to go, Humpy is sharing the fifth spot with three others at two points in the eight-player round-robin event.

Former World champion Bulgaria’s Antoaneta Stefanova defeated French girl Marie Sebag to reach four points for a one-point lead.

In the Dutch Open at Dieren, in Holland, Sandipan Chanda was part of a five-way tie for the second place and eventually finished third with 6.5 points from nine rounds. Ali Bilalzadeh of the Netherlands was the winner with 7.5 points.

In the Biel Masters in Biel, Switzerland, N. Srinath and R. B. Ramesh lost their 10th-round games. In the Edmonton International, at Edmonton in Canada, the lone Indian Surya Shekhar Ganguly began his campaign with a draw.

The results: North Urals Cup (fifth round): K. Humpy (2) drew with Anna Muzychuk (Slo, 2); Antoaneta Stefanova (Bul, 4) bt Marie Sebag (Fra, 2.5); Anna Ushenina (Ukr, 2.5) drew Pia Cramling (Swe, 2); Natalia Pogonina (Rs, 2) drew with Xu Yuhua (Chn, 3).

Dutch Open (ninth round): Reinder Odendahl (Ger, 6.5) drew with Sandipan Chanda (6.5); Renze Rietveld (Ned, 4.5) drew with Sriram Jha (4.5).

Biel Masters (10th round): N. Srinath (6) lost to Falko Bindrich (Ger, 7); Ramesh (5.5) lost to Etienne Mensch (Fra, 6.5).

Edmonton International (first round): Shiyam Thavandiran (Can) drew with Surya Shekhar Ganguly.
