FINE FEAT: P. Uthra, M. Mahalakshmi and B. Adhiban of Velammal MHSS, who did the country proud at the Asian Youth chess championship in Tehran. CHENNAI: Velammal MHSS, on Friday, felicitated seven of its students who brought laurels to the school in the Asian Youth chess championships held in Tehran (Iran). M. Mahalakshmi, P. Uthra, B. Adhiban, J. Mohana Priya, M. Shyam Sundar, S.P. Sethuraman and R. Pradeep Kumar were driven in a horse chariot, garlanded and given a cash prize of Rs. 50,000 each during the assembly. Uthra won the gold in the girls’ under-18 section while Mahalakshmi clinched the first place in the girls’ under 10 category (she was bestowed with an educational scholarship of Rs. 60,000). Adhiban won silver in the boys’ under-16 section. The rest were all participants in the championship. D.V. Sundar, Secretary, All-India Chess Federation, praised the Velammal management and especially its Correspondent M.V.M. Velmohan for promoting chess in a big way. Describing Mahalakshmi as a “prodigy”, Sundar said he expected much more from her. P.R. Venketarama Raja, President, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, spoke about Velammal’s quest for excellence and expressed his desire to see someone from this group of seven to emerge in the top-10 in the world in five years time. J.C.D. Prabhakar, Vice-President, Tamil Nadu State Chess Association and K. Muralimohan, Secretary, TNSCA, also spoke. — Principal Correspondent
