Bhuvana to meet Sharmila in final

CHENNAI: K. Bhuvana and A. Sharmila entered the girls’ under-16 final of the Lanson Toyota UC MAS Singaram Pillai AITA talent series tournament here on Friday.

Bhuvana defeated Maya Mahalingam 6-3, 6-0 and Sharmila downed R. Binu 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Other results: Boys: Semifinals: U-16: C. Ravishankar bt Trivesh Singh 6-3, 6-2; Viswajit Tirumurthi bt Harsh Ramakrishnan 6-1, 6-0.

Easy win for Vaishnava Club

With a tally of three goals each, Manisha and Sandhya were the stars in the 12-0 victory that Vaishnava Club recorded against Cosmos Club (Tiruvallur) in the Winning XI Women’s Hockey Club State-level annual tournament that began at the Mayor Radhakrishnan Stadium on Friday. The winner led 7-0 at half-time.

In the opening match, Vidyodaya and Gymkhana (Chennai) were locked in a goal-less draw forcing a tie-breaker. Gymkhana Club won 4-3.

Rekha Ramachandran, President, Down’s Syndrome Association of India (TN Chapter), inaugurated the tournament in the presence of S.R. Bhasgeran of Reserve Bank of India.

The results: Gymkhana (Chennai) 4 (Nandini, Kalaimathi, Mythali, Jayashree) bt Vidyodaya 3 (Kanimozhi, Sasirekha, Shobana) in tie-breaker. Regulation time 0-0; Vaishnava Club 12 (Priyadarshini 2, Manisha 3, Keerthi, Sandhya 3, Devi, Kausalya and Gauthami) bt Cosmos Club (Tiruvallur) 0.

Uday shines

Uday Teja’s 71 enabled Modern defeat Maharishi Vidya Mandir by 39 runs in the SMCA under-14 inter-School cricket tournament here.

The scores: Modern 159 for nine in 30 overs (Uday Teja 71, B. Dixit 39, Krishna four for 29) bt Maharishi Vidya Mandir 120 in 30 overs (Krupasankar 44); St. John’s 131 in 26.5 overs (Geeth Puri 26, S. Sriram four for 17) bt Sri Sankara 94 for nine in 30 overs.

Double for SDNB Vaishnav College

SDNB Vaishnav College emerged triumphant in football and kho-kho events in the college category of the Bhatt Memorial tournament being held here. Stella Mary’s College and Queen Mary’s clinched the hockey and kabaddi titles respectively. For schools, Valluvar Gurukulum finished first in volleyball.

Baseball trials

The Chennai District Baseball Association will conduct trials on August 17, at Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam School, for selection of the junior state team for the junior Nationals to be held in Kolkata from September 14 to 18.

Chess tournament

The Tamil Nadu State Chess Association will organise an open lightning tournament on August 3 (2 p.m.) at Bapalal Bhavan, First Seaward Road, Valmiki Nagar, Thiruvanmiyur, Chennai - 41. Amarnath to replace Yomahesh

Palani Amarnath of Grand Slam CC has been selected to replace V. Yomahesh in the Tamil Nadu team travelling to Hyderabad for the Moin-ud-Dowla Gold Cup tournament. A press release issued by K.S. Viswanathan, TNCA Secretary, announced that Yomahesh had been declared unfit to play the tournament.
