Youth Baton Relay flagged off
NEW DELHI: The Youth Baton Relay of the third Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) was flagged off from the Delhi University (DU) North Campus here on Friday.
Former Indian hockey captain Dhanraj Pillay started the relay that will cover a distance of 8000km through nine States before reaching Pune — the venue of the CYG. The relay touched eight colleges in the capital city before ending the day’s journey at the St. Stephen’s College.
The relay, a novel concept based on the Queen’s Baton Relay conducted before the Commonwealth Games (CWG), will depart for Gurgaon on Sunday.
As part of the ‘Green Games’ initiative, the baton will collect water from all the States on its route. The water, along with water collected from 71 other participating nations, will be used to create the ‘Fountain of Youth’ at the CYG opening ceremony at the Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex in Pune on October 12. — Sports Reporter
