Nitin in sole lead

Arvind Aaron

CHENNAI: Sixteen-year-old top seed FIDE Master S. Nitin of Salem scored over Ram S. Krishnan of BSNL in the seventh round to move into sole lead in the Adyar Times FIDE-rating chess tournament, here on Friday.

Nitin, who won in 45 moves with a king side attack, said black could have gone into an ending with a slight advantage. Ram, as black, chose to go for a queen side pawn which landed him in a mating net.

Nitin leads with seven points from seven rounds. Three rounds remain to be played.

In the second place on 6.5 points is Praveen Prasad of Hyderabad. He beat Abhilash Reddy of Gowtham International School (Vijayawada) in 49 moves with a side variation against the Najdorf Sicilian opening.

Praveen Kumar was lucky when Pratik Shriwas completed only 33 moves and lost on time when the position was in balance.

After eight moves, T.R. Shanmuganathan noticed that his opponent Saket Kumar of Delhi was using his mobile phone and claimed a point which was awarded by chief arbiter S. Paul Arokia Raj.

Saket paid the protest fee and pleaded that there was no “sim” inside his phone and was only handling the phone. K. Muralimohan, General Secretary of the Tamil Nadu State Chess Association, which is the organiser, upheld the chief arbiters’ decision and said it was an administrative matter and did not refer the matter to the Appeals Committee.
