BHUBANESWAR: In its attempt to familiarise the city folks in general and tourists in particular about the culture and philosophy associated with Lord Jagannath, the Department of Culture in association with the Orissa Sahitya Akademi, Orissa Lalit Kala Akademi and Orissa Sangeet Natak Akademi staged an exclusive cultural evening – aptly named as Sri Jagannathayana - here at Rabindra Mandap. Interestingly, all the segments of the event revolved round the story of Lord Jagannath. The evening was set to motion by Berhampur-based twins Ram-Laxam who have carved a niche for themselves in rendition of traditional Odissi music. The duo rendered devotional songs as their offering to the Lord that was followed by a spiritual discourse by Siddheswar Mohapatra, a scholar on the cult of Jagannath. Mishra’s deliberations largely dwelt on how culture and philosophy have a harmonious blend in the rituals of the Lord. City-based Mayuri Dance Academy presented Odissi dance drama “Bidagdha Chintamani” depicted various episodes from the life of Lord Krishna. Students of B.K. College of Art and Craft mounted an exhibition of paintings and sculptures based on Jagannath.
