Handicrafts on show: At the VJT Hall, Thiruvananthapuram. – THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Handloom textiles and ethnic jewellery vie for attention with colourful toys and handicrafts in wood, metal, bamboo, cane and coconut shell. The ongoing handicrafts exhibition and sale organised by the Kerala state handicrafts apex cooperative society (Surabhi) at the VJT hall has proved to be a big draw as the city gets ready to ring in the Onam festival season. Curios and household items from various States form the main exhibits. Primary handicrafts cooperative societies have displayed their products including statues in rosewood and sandalwood, decorative items, lacquered toys, bamboo and cane products, paintings and aromatic oils. Visitors are also attracted by alloy handicrafts, carved stone, terracotta, leather, pearl and stone jewellery, handloom saris, bed-sheets, dress materials and lace embroidery. The stall featuring Kashmiri handicrafts is a major attraction at the fair. According to the organisers, the exhibition is aimed at expanding the market for handicrafts and ensuring maximum remuneration for artisans by eliminating middlemen. The fair will continue till Sunday night.
