PROUD MOMENT: Etihad Airways officials posing by the nose wheel of the inaugural flight that landed at Calicut International Airport, Karipur, at 5 a.m. on Saturday. MALAPPURAM: The United Arab Emirate’s (UAE) national airline, Etihad Airways, started operations to Calicut International Airport at Karipur on Saturday. The airline will operate daily services between Karipur and Abu Dhabi. Flight EY250 will depart Abu Dhabi at 11.35 p.m. and arrive at Karipur at 5 a.m. The return flight, EY251, will fly out from Karipur at 5.45 a.m. and land in Abu Dhabi at 8 a.m. Karipur has become Etihad’s third destination in the State. It is already operating services to Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram. The inaugural flight was received at Karipur by Etihad’s manager for India and Sri Lanka Neerja Bhatia and Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry president N.E. Balakrishna Marar. Chamber vice-president Anup Narayanan and Brendan Joseph Cummings, Etihad’s Asia-Pacific regional general manager for airport operations were present. Service to ChennaiEtihad also launched its services to Chennai on Saturday, establishing connectivity to the six destinations in the country. Etihad now operates 41 flights a week from the UAE to India, with flights from Abu Dhabi also serving Mumbai and New Delhi, a press release issued here on Saturday said. Etihad will fly a two-class Airbus A320 on both Karipur and Chennai routes configured to carry 140 passengers with 20 in business class and 120 in economy class. Currently, Etihad offers flights to 45 destinations in the Middle East, Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Australia.
