PUDUCHERRY: The Parliamentary panel on Women’s Reservation Bill has been thinking on the lines of accommodating the views of the parties which insisted that internal quota should be provided to women belonging to the Other Backward Classes, according to Member of the Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice M.Ramadass. Shortly after eliciting the views of the representatives of women’s associations and human rights organisations at an “opinion dialogue” here on Saturday, Mr. Ramadass told The Hindu that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government was now working out a “via media” to incorporate the demand for providing internal reservation for the OBCs within the 33 percentage net. As the support of the parties including the Samajwadi Party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Lok Janshakti which had been opposing the Women’s Reservation Bill in its present form, was vital for the survival of the government, if their demand for internal quota was not incorporated, the Bill could not see the light of the day, he said.Denying that these p rties had been posing impediments to the smooth passage of the Bill, Mr.Ramadass said, “if you look at this issue deeply, there is genuine justification for this argument and without any difficulty, we can accommodate their demand also, as the Constitution has provided for reservation of seats for the OBCs in the local bodies through amendment of Article 243 (D) and (T).”
