PUDUCHERRY: A large number of political and trade union activists took part in a silent procession here on Saturday to condole the death former general secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Harkishan Singh Surjeet. The procession started from a venue near the Swadeshi Mill and culminated in a condolence meeting held near the statue of E.V. Ramasamy. A huge portrait of the Communist leader was carried at the head of the procession. Secretary of the Puducherry unit of the CPI (M) V. Perumal presided over the condolence meeting. Among others, national council member of the Communist Party of India R. Viswanathan, Tamil Nadu CPI (M) committee member T. Murugan, vice-president of the Puducherry Munnetra Congress K. Lakshminarayanan, leader of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam R. Rajaraman, organising secretary of the Puducherry unit of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi S. Pavanan, functionary of the Janata Dal (Secular) E. Ganeasan and Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam leader Velu recalled the role played by the veteran communist leader in strengthening secular forces and promoting the interest of the working class. CuddaloreCPI (M) cadres held condolence meetings at several places in the district on Saturday. In a statement released here, S. Dhanasekaran, district secretary of the party, said meetings were held in Cuddalore, Chidambaram, Neyveli, Panruti, Vriddhachalam, Kattumannarkoil, Thittakudi and Kurinjipadi.
