INSIGHT: K. Purushothaman, Regional Director, NASSCOM, Chennai, interacting with students at Kalasalingam University, Krishnakoil, on Friday. T. Kalasalingam (centre), Chancellor, and C.Thangaraj, Vice-Chancellor, are seen. SRIVILLIPUTTUR: Engineering students should understand the requirements of the industry and equip themselves accordingly to find placements, the Regional Director of NASSCOM (National Association of Software and Service Companies), K. Purushothaman, said. Addressing the inaugural function of a two-day faculty development programme (FDP) at Kalasalingam University near here on Friday, he said that in the present scenario the industry had no time to train students after offering them jobs. “We want ready-to-deploy professionals,” he said. Since engineering courses did not have a defined curriculum on software quality, the NASSCOM was organising FDPs in reputed institutions, he said. Though Mr. Purushothaman cautioned the students about slowdown in the IT industry that had led to a lot of retrenchments, he said that only those well-equipped could find placements. IT companies in a spotRising salaries and reducing profits had put the IT companies in a tight spot, he said and added that many countries were trying to follow the low cost offshore models in India. This slowdown was only in terms of volume of business, and the industry was dynamic enough to bounce back, he added. The Vice-Chancellor, C. Thangaraj, said that the fast changing technologies were most challenging and 40 technologies were to mature by 2030. When the stakeholders themselves did not know what their requirements were, it was difficult for IT companies. The Chancellor, T. Kalasalingam, and the Director, Academic and Faculty Affairs, S. Saravana Sankar, were among those who were present. Experts from IT majors, Infosys, Accenture, Cognizant, Wipro, Infotech, Congruent and Hewlett Packard, provided the training.
