PUDUCHERRY: If the country had to gain a respectable position among the comity of nations, it had to make great strides in the social sector even as it made economic progress, Member of the Union Public Service Commission E. Balagurusamy said here on Saturday. Delivering the graduation day address at Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) here, he said the country would not be able to gain the “pride of place” in the international sphere if it merely concentrated on economic growth. Doctors had a major responsibility in the nation’s progress, he said, adding that their contribution to the social sector was vital. The trend among medical graduates to turn away from taking up assignments in villages was against ethics, Mr. Balagurusamy said. As many as 169 students belonging to the 2002 and 2003 batches received certificates and prizes.
