Sheila lays foundation stone of a community centre and school in Mayur Vihar

‘Land has already been identified for setting up the proposed university’

‘Games Village to boost growth in East Delhi; to be at par with other developed areas of Delhi’

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Saturday announced that Delhi will soon have a brand new South Asian Association of Regional Cooperation (SAARC) University.

Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of a community centre and school here in Mayur Vihar, Ms. Dikshit said the international-level university would meet the needs of students from SAARC countries.

“The land has already been identified for setting up the university,” she added.

Asserting that her government was fully conscious of the development needs of the Capital’s trans-Yamuna area, the Chief Minister said: “We are committed to fulfilling them in right earnest. The past few years have witnessed the coming up of super-specialty and other hospitals, community centres and cultural centres in the area. With the growth catalysed by the proposed construction of the Commonwealth Games Village in the area, East Delhi is expected to be at par with any other developed area of the Capital.”

Expressing confidence that the new community centre would serve as an important place for social gatherings and community programmes, Ms. Dikshit said the community hall was being constructed on an area of 2,388 square metres. “Within one year it would get completed at a cost of around Rs.112 lakh. The community hall on the ground floor will consist of a spacious hall with double height, a kitchen, two toilets -- one each for ladies and gents -- and a caretaker room. The first floor will be used for library. The community hall will have all the facilities of organising social functions by the local residents,” she added.

The Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone of a school that will be constructed by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. “Construction of the school has been a long-pending demand of the local residents. It would be completed within a year,” she added.

Congratulating the Delhi Government and the Trans-Yamuna Development Board for supporting the cause of development in the trans-Yamuna area, the Member of Parliament from East Delhi, Sandeep Dikshit, said the community centre would serve the social and cultural needs of the local residents.

The Trans-Yamuna Development Board chairman, Narendra Nath, and local MLA Amrish Singh Gautam were among those present.
