DTC losing Rs. 60 per km: BJP

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party president Harsh Vardhan has charged that the Congress Government in Delhi has failed in framing an effective transport policy during the past 10 years and this is why traffic jams have become so commonplace acr-oss the Capital. He charged that the Delhi Transport Corporation was losing Rs.60 per km on its bus operations.

In a statement, Dr. Vardhan said the people in Delhi were still dependent on their private vehicles because the Government had not been able to provide them with a reliable public transport system in all these years.

“This is the reason why people also face traffic jams everyday and this leads to air pollution and huge wastage of money and time,” he added.

As for public transport, the BJP leader said it was only because of gross mismanagement that the DTC runs only 50 per cent of its buses everyday and this deprives the people of 6,000 to 7,000 trips. Besides, he said, the DTC losses are mounting as it had been spending Rs.80 per km on each bus whereas its income was only Rs.20 per km.

Dr. Vardhan also accused the Government of leaving the people at the mercy of Blueline buses that have still not been phased out despite repeated assurances.

The BJP leader also claimed that the Delhi Metro railway was the brainchild of the BJP and was conceptualised during its rule in Delhi.
