Police meet to showcase investigative skills

VIJAYAWADA: Additional Director-General of Police (organisation) J.V. Ramudu on Saturday said that the four-day State-level police duty meet being held in the city from August 5 was aimed at improving the efficiency and skills of the police forces.

Over 400 policemen from different parts of the State would participate in the programme. It would be inaugurated by Director-General of Police S.S.P. Yadav. Home Minister K. Jana Reddy would participate in the valedictory on August 8.

Mr. Ramudu, who released a poster and souvenir of the duty meet, said that latest technology available for the police would be on display in different stalls during the programme. Topics such as fingerprinting, scientific aids, investigation procedure to crack medico-legal cases, foot-printing, photography observation test, portraits, use of information technology, professional photography, dog squad and anti-sabotage checks would be covered at different venues, including the Armed Reserve Ground, Indira Gandhi Municipal Corporation Stadium, Siddhartha Auditorium and Mango Market at Nunna.

Mr. Ramudu said that the Police Department would be strengthened further in the next four years with the Government planning to recruit over 40,000 men. “In the first phase, the procedure is going on to recruit 1,600 sub-inspectors and 1,400 constables. The selections will be done in different batches and it will take at least five years for the last batch to come out from training,” he said.

To a question on the status of the proposed special counter-terrorist force called ‘OCTOPUS’, Mr. Ramudu said work was going on to put it in place at the earliest. He said in reply to another poser there were no plans to post representatives of this special force in districts. “There is no need for this wing to work simultaneously from all districts. Whenever there is a need, staff from Hyderabad will visit the place and take up the task,” he said.

The duty of the OCTOPUS was not to conduct regular checks but only to investigate into special cases, Mr. Ramudu said, adding that the intelligence and special branches too would be strengthened.

City Police Commissioner K.V. Rajendranath Reddy, Deputy Commissioner of Police U.V.S. Raju and other officials were present.
