Southern Railway records 32% increase in loading

CHENNAI: Southern Railway recorded a 32 per cent increase in loading in July this year compared with the same period last year.

A railway release stated that all divisions of Southern Railway showed an increase in loading. The Trivandrum division registered a 25 per cent increase in petroleum products and the Palghat division recorded the highest ever loading of limestone from the Mangalore port. The Chennai division recorded a 23 per cent increase in coal loading from Chennai and Ennore ports. The Madurai division showed an 80 per cent improvement in incremental loading.

The loading performance for the first four months (April to July this year) improved 19 per cent more than the same period last year. The zone achieved 11.15 million tonnes as against 9.4 million tonnes last year.

More movement of coal was the reason for the increase. During July, Southern Railway loaded 5 rakes a day from Chennai and one rake from Tuticorin. Coal loading from April to July was 53 per cent more than the quantum loaded last year, the release said. The movement of cement had also increased tremendously. It showed a 57 per cent improvement during the first four months compared with the same period last year. The increase in diesel prices, and in production in some plants in Tamil Nadu had contributed to this.

Steel volume up

The zone accounted for the movement of steel from the Jindal Steel Plant at Mecheri Road and limestone from the New Mangalore Port. Both commodities had shown a sharp increase in volume.
