Breastfeeding Week celebrated

PUDUKOTTAI: Speakers at the inaugural of the ‘World Breastfeeding Week’ organised jointly by the Rotary Club of Pudukottai Midtown; Innerwheel Club of Pudukottai and the Pudukottai branch of Breastfeeding Promotion Network of India (BPNI) underlined the importance of breastfeeding for achieving the overall physical and mental growth of children.

The Hospital Superintendent of Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy Memorial Government Headquarters Hospital, S. Rengadurai and the District Co-ordinator of BPNI – TTKPN, Abdul Latheef explained how breast-milk acted as a strong immunisation agent, protecting the children from several diseases.

A gynaecologist from Ranee’s Hospital, Jeyalakshmi said that breastfeeding enhanced an affection between the mother and the infant.

A number of paediatrics and specialists, including Subbiah, Ramadoss; the Secretary of the Innerwheel Club of Pudukottai and Rotary Club of Midtown, S. Akila and S. Basheer respectively emphasised the importance of sensitising pregnant women to breastfeeding.

A compact disc was played on the occasion in which useful tips on consumption of nutrient vegetables by pregnant women and the need for compulsory breastfeeding for two years were explained.
