Two persons arrested for murder

Staff Reporter

They were wanted in connection with the murder of a computer engineer

CHENNAI: Two persons wanted in connection with the murder of a man in Tondiarpet on Monday were arrested on Friday. The police identified them as Manoj and Karthik.

According to police, the accused had been drinking in a TASMAC bar on Kothandaraman Street, when they spotted the deceased, Prakash, a computer engineer. Prakash had stepped out of his house to buy medicine for his mother.

He was wearing a gold chain weighing around five grams. Manoj and Karthik, who were hard up for cash, accosted him and asked him to part with his chain.

When Prakash refused, Manoj and Karthik allegedly stabbed him. They relieved Prakash of the chain and mobile phone and fled. A seriously injured Prakash rushed home and told his family that two men had stabbed him.

He was rushed to a private hospital where doctors said his condition was serious and that he should be shifted to Government Stanley Hospital, where he died. Since his death Tondiarpet police had been questioning his friends. “We were misled by a photograph of a girl we found in Prakash’s home. He had also bought a gift for her. Investigations revealed that the girl was merely a friend and had no serious interest in him,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Washermenpet) N. Kamini. Prakash worked as a technician in Prasad Colour Laboratory in Kodambakkam, she added.

The police traced the IMEI number of the stolen mobile phone.

The accused changed the SIM card and had continued to use the mobile phone. On being caught, the accused admitted to their crime, she said.
