Public policy meet begins today

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: The third International Conference on Public Policy and Management will begin on Sunday and go on till August 6 at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), with this year’s themes being Public Private Partnership and Urban Governance.

Organised by the Centre for Public Policy (CPP), it will be inaugurated by Governor Rameshwar Thakur.

The themes chosen for this year’s conference are in relation to the overall changing global environment but also to Karnataka and a city such as Bangalore which has been an example of urban governance reforms for almost a decade now.

Incubator of ideas

Still grappling with how various sectors and sub-sectors and competencies intersect in the arena of public policy, the conference hopes to be a multidisciplinary forum and an incubator of new ideas and solutions.

The conference will, in 30 sessions, be presenting 115 out of 160 papers CPP received from around the world.

Sub-themes include urban planning, urban finance, governance and civil societies and infrastructure.

The keynote speakers include Samuel Paul, founder-chairperson of Public Affairs Centre, Bangalore. Prof. Paul, who has been a professor of economics and an advisor to the World Bank and International Labour Organisation, will be speaking on Monday between 9 a.m. and 10.15 a.m.

Pronab Sen, Secretary, Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, will address members of the conference on August 5 between 9 a.m. and 10.15 a.m.

He has taught at various institutes and worked at the World Institute for Development for Economics Research.

CPP is a think-tank engaged in research, teaching and capacity building and was created in 2000 through a partnership between the Department of Personnel and Training of the Union Government and the United Nations Development Programme and IIMB.
