G.B. Pant University develops new vegetables

DEHRA DUN: Three varieties of bitter gourd, bottle gourd and vegetable pea developed by the scientists of G.B. Pant University of Agriculture and Technology in Pantnagar have been released by the Uttarakhand State Variety Release Committee.

Announcing this here, Vice Chancellor A.P. Sharma said the bitter gourd variety, Pant Karela-3, is an early duration high-yielding variety suitable from the hills and plains of North India.

The new bottle gourd variety, Pant Lauki-4, is a medium-duration, high-yielding variety. It has long hairy fruits of light green colour with light stripes. It is suitable for the hills and plains of North India.

Pant Vegetable Pea-5, the new pea variety, is an early-maturing variety. The plant is dwarf, with green foliage. The pods are long, well-filled and slightly curved towards the tip. Seeds are green, wrinkled at maturity and are sweet. It is resistant to powdery mildew disease. The first green pod picking can be taken within 60-65 days and the seeds mature in 100-110 days after sowing.

“This variety is suitable for cultivation in Kumaon hills and the plains of Uttarakhand,” Dr. Sharma said.
