NEW DELHI: If the enthusiastic response to the facility of filing income-tax returns electronically (e-returns) is any indication, the fast spread of computerisation appears to have made the country’s taxpayers distinctly tech savvy. As on July 31 this year — the deadline that was fixed by the Income-tax Department for filing of tax returns by individuals and non-corporates — the number of e-returns filed was an overwhelming 12.49 lakh against 1.46 lakh e-returns filed up to the same date last year. Moreover, while e-filing of tax returns this year was made mandatory for only corporates and large firms, a total of 12.14 lakh or about 97 per cent of the 12.49 lakh e-returns were filed voluntarily by individual assessees, professionals and small businesses. During 2007-08 (up to March 31, 2008) about 21.93 lakh e-returns were filed by taxpayers from all over India. Out of these, over 14.6 lakh e-returns were filed voluntarily.
