Indian Bank regains trophy

Madurai: Indian Bank (Chennai) regained the Rajamani memorial trophy, defeating the defending champion Southern Railway (Chennai) 1-0 in the final of the State-level hockey tournament at the Police Centenary Stadium here on Saturday. Southern Railway got the Kanagamani Ammal Trophy.

The all-important goal came a minute from close through penalty corner. V. Raja scored off a rebound from goalkeeper Suresh, who blocked the penalty corner shot taken by Alfred Ascer.

A goal scored by Vimalanathan following a penalty corner helped Indian Overseas Bank defeat last year’s runner-up Integral Coach Factory 1-0 for the third place.

Mr. K. Nandabalan, Commissioner of Police, gave away the trophies. Mr. S.S. Krishnamurthy, DIG of Police, Madurai Range, distributed the prizes.

Azaruddin shines

Azaruddin (65 n.o.) helped LFRC School defeat Maharishi Vidya Mandir by 17 runs and entered the semifinals of the Sivagangai District Boost Trophy inter-school (under-16) cricket tournament at Karaikudi on Saturday.

The scores (quarterfinals):

LFRC School, Karaikudi 153 for seven in 20 overs (Azaruddin 65 not out) bt Maharishi Vidya Mandir 136 in 20 overs (Arun three for 30).

Muthiah Alagappa MHSS, Kottaiyur 188 for eight in 20 overs (Vignesh 60, Udaiyappan three for 40) bt Vairam MHSS, Devakottai 70 in 16 overs (Marudhu three for 15).

SMS Vidyasala, Karaikudi 120 for two in 20 overs (Karthikeyan 43, Shyam Kumar 35 not out) lost to Alagappa MHSS, Karaikudi 121 for seven in 19 overs (Mohammed Syed Abudhahir 31, Panneer three for 30).

Rajah’s HSS, Sivagangai 65 in 10 overs (Karthik three for 15) bt Sambarika HSS 35 in seven overs (Gopinath three for six).

At Madurai (first round): AC HSS ‘B’ 99 for eight in 25 overs (Rigin Jose 32, Malayaradi four for 20) lost to Govt. HSS, Vallalapatti 100 for nine in 17 overs (Ibrahim 25 not out, Ganesh Kumar five fore 28).

Boys Town Thirumangalam 80 in 12.2 overs (Vetrivel three for 10, Suresh three for 15) lost to MMHSS, Thirunagar 81 for five in 15overs.

SDH Jain Vidyala 147 for nine in 20 overs (Varun 34, D. Kumar four for 21) bt Mangayarkarasi HSS 137 for eight in 20 overs (Murugan 36).

St. Michael HSS 121 (Ashik 31, Vinoth three for 14) lost to Seventh Day Adventist MHSS, Kochadai 122 for three in 15 overs (Vivek 33 not out).
