Rice scheme runs into trouble at Cuttack

Correspondent

CUTTACK: The much-hyped Rs. 2-a-kg rice scheme that was launched with fanfare State-wide on Saturday hit a road blockade when the programme was inaugurated here for Cuttack district.

The inauguration meeting, in presence of the BJD Rajya Sabha member Pyari Mohan Mohapatra, witnessed pandemonium at Saheed Bhawan when a handful of the NCP activists stormed the meeting place demanding an explanation. After a brief interruption, the programme resumed when protesting NCP activists were taken away from the meeting place by the police.

Along with Mohapatra, State Higher Education Minister and Cuttack city legislator Samir Dey, Cuttack sadar MLA Pravat Biswal, city Mayor Nibedita Pradhan, deputy mayor Madhu Sahu and Jagatsinghpur MP Brahmananda Panda were present on the occasion.

When the meeting began, the NCP activists led by city civic body corporator Seshadev Nanda stood up seeking an explanation from the dignitaries on the dais as to how the programme would run in the city when several beneficiaries here have not received their below poverty line (BPL) card.

Even as several ruling alliance activists tried to stop the NCP activists from creating any interruption, Nanda pushed his way to the dais leading to a commotion.
