CHENNAI: Bharathi Vidya Bhavan (Erode) defeated Government HSS (Chennai) 43-8 in the girls’ section of the State-level inter-School basketball tournament, organised by Sir M.Ct. MHSS, at the School premises here on Saturday.

The results: Boys: Sir M.Ct. MHSS 56 (Harish 14) bt Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram (Chen) 26; Union Christian (Chen) 43 (Sriram 18, Fabian 12) bt Govt. H.S.S (Bhadagundu) 38 (Kasirajan 14); St. Peter’s 76 (Vijaysekar 20, Senthil 19) bt Kamala Subramaiam (Tanjore) 57 (Stalin 26).

Girls: Bharthi Vidya Bhavan (Erode) 43 (Aroikyajothi 14, Jayabharathi 10) bt Govt. GHSS (Chen) 8; Vidhyodhaya (Chen) 22 (Divya 10) bt Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidhyashram (Chen) 8.

Vignesh shines

I.G. Vignesh, scoring an unbeaten 77, set up a 23-run victory for St. Patrick’s against Chinmaya Vidyalaya in the SMCA under-14 schools tournament here on Saturday.

The scores: St. Patrick’s 173 for three in 25 overs (I.G. Vignesh 77 n.o., A. Joseph Ranjith 38 n.o.) bt Chinmaya Vidyalaya 150 for eight in 25 overs (R. Rajath 45, J. Vivian 37, Imran three for 27); Doveton Corrie 256 for six in 30 overs (Yashwanth 72, Ashok 56, M. Sriram three for 36) bt Modern SSS ‘B’ 156 in 28.5 overs (Adithyan 46, R. Yashwanth 54 n.o.)

Deccan Chargers wins

Deccan Chargers, comprising T.N. Raghu and M.S. Nagarajan, secured 105 points and won the title and prize money of Rs. 10,000 in the Hindustan University-Hotel Green Park Quiz 2008, organised by the Hindustan Sports Foundation at Hotel Green Park, on Friday.

Summer Moonshine, comprising Meera and Sankhya, finished runner-up with 75 points and received Rs. 5,000. Team Vetti Venkies, comprising S. Gaurav and S. Harish finished third (70 points) and took home Rs. 3,000.

Ashok Verghese, Joint Director, Hindustan University, announced that his University will sponsor flight tickets to the winning team to witness the Beijing Olympic Games.

Chess tournament

Modern Senior Secondary School will conduct an international FIDE-rated chess tournament exclusively for schoolchildren, consisting of ten rounds using the Swiss system, from August 18 to 23.

Top Indian youngsters, including IMs and FIDE-rated players, are expected to take part in the tournament, limited to 300 players on a first-come-first-serve basis. Entry fee for rated players is Rs. 700 and Rs. 800 for unrated players. Players will be provided free boarding and lodging during the tournament.
