Thiruvananthapuram: Lighting of lamps, music programmes, a drawing competition for children and an exhibition are some of the major events planned in the city as part of the International Peace Day on August 6.

The events will be jointly organised by the Department of Information and Public Relations, Swaranjali and YMCA.

Mayor C. Jayan Babu is scheduled to inaugurate the Hiroshima Day commemorative function at the YMCA Hall.

Peace music

While noted music director Ramesh Narayan will present a programme titled ‘Harmony in Music,’ students from the Government College for Women and the University’s Department of Music will participate in a peace music programme.

Debate for students

Students from various schools and colleges are expected to participate in a debate on the subject ‘Is War Necessary?’ The winners will be presented with mementos, certificates and gifts.

Social, political and cultural leaders will light 63 peace lamps at the Secretariat avenue to commemorate the bombing of Hiroshima in 1945. An expo revealing the destructive face of war and Peace Music programmes will be organised in school and colleges campuses in the city from August 6 to 9.
